William "Bill" Byous

I was born June 28, 1941 as William Floyd Byous, II. As I got older, "Floyd" and"II" got old, so I dropped them from my name. After being discharged from High School I joined the U.S. Navy in November 1958 and went to Great Lakes (The REAL NAVY BOOT CAMP.) on January 5, 1959. My first duty station was Naval Station 32nd Street, San Diego, CA. Other duty stations were:

U.S.S. Bayfield (APA-33)
U.S.S. Lexington (CVA-16)
AC & R School in San Diego
U.S.S. Valley Forge (LPH-8)
Long Beach
Basic Nuclear Power School, Vallejo, CA
West Milton Site, NY (Second half of Nuclear Power School)
U.S.S. Lawrence (DDG-4)

I was discharged from the Navy in 1968 and returned to San Diego, where I have lived ever since.

I have worked at NASCO, J & S Appliance, RCA Service Co., ran my own business (Mira Mesa Appliance) and the City of San Diego (Retired).

I have two daughters (Laura Anne and Andra Eileen) and one son (Eric William). Laura and her husband, David, have one son (Stephen-17). Eric and his wife, Erin, have one son (Joshua-2) and are expecting a daughter in January 2007.

My Masonic journey started in 1979 and I was raised a Master Mason on June 30, 1980 in San Diego Lodge, No. 35. I served there as a Candidate's Coach and when my duties as Scout Master became rather heavy, I took a leave of absence from Masonry until my son made Eagle Scout. When Black Moubtain Masonic Club got started in Mira Mesa, CA, I attended the meetings and I am a Charter Member of (now) Black Mountain Lodge No 845. In 2001 I was humbled and honored as a recipient of the "Hiram Award". I served as Master of my Lodge in 2002 and have served as Officers' Coach ever since. In 2004 and 2006 Black Mountain No. 845 again bestowed honors upon me by presenting me with the "Mason of the Year Award".

I started attending Al Bahr Drum & Bugle Corps practices before I served as Master and, near the end of my year, I joined Al Bahr Shrine and became a "legal" member of "The Proud Ones". I was elected to serve as President of the Al Bahr Drum & Bugle Corps in 2005 and have remained in this position since. I thoroughly enjoy the Nobles and Ladies of this Unit and only wish that I had joined it years ago. My goal is to do everything in my power to maintain the great pride this Unit has instilled in the past and enable it to serve Al Bahr Shrine at all of its functions.

Why don't you come on over and visit us and see for yourself why so many of our members have been with the Unit for so long?

I am currently a member of Black Mountain Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of San Diego, Al Bahr Shrine and currently serving as President of Al Bahr Shrine Drum & Bugle Corps.

I am a Snare Drummer and have been a member of the Drum & Bugle Corps since 2002.
